Giving & Donations

At St Bartholomew’s we take the stewardship of money very seriously. We are extremely grateful for all financial gifts which will be used towards our running costs such as:

  • General upkeep of the church and for our Services
  • Our contribution to the Diocese of Rochester (to pay for things like paying our vicar, costs of the vicarage, training new ministers, safeguarding, upkeep of churches, etc.)
  • Our charitable partners – known as mission partners – which are a mix of local, national and international organisations with a Christian ethos.

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Gift Aid

Whichever way you give, please fill out and return a Gift Aid Declaration available here if you are a UK taxpayer. This enables us to claim back 25p from HMRC for every £1 given.

Regular Giving

It helps the church to plan and organise our finances if we receive donations in a regular way so we know what to expect and when. This can be done in one of two ways:

  • During a service: At all our services there is an opportunity to make a financial offering. If you regularly give during a service, then please speak to the Treasurer who can supply you with envelopes into which you can place your offering of cash or a cheque (made payable to “PCC of St Bartholomew Otford”). Simply place your envelope in the box at the back of the church or into the giving plate which is circulated during the service.
  • Standing order: You can arrange a standing order from your bank account directly to the church account. Please download our Standing Order Form here and return to the church office in an envelope addressed to “The Treasurer”. Alternatively, you can set-up a standing order with your bank using our bank details below. Please use your surname and initials as your reference, and let us know that you have set up a Standing Order by contacting our Treasurer using our contact form.

One-off Giving

We welcome one-off gifts in a variety of ways:

  • During a service: At all our services there is an opportunity to make a financial offering. Simply place your giving in the box at the back of the church or into the giving plate which is circulated during the service.
  • Card Reader: If you prefer to give contactless then we have a card reader at the back of church.
  • Cheque: If you wish to give by cheque, please make it payable to “PCC of St Bartholomew Otford”.
  • Online Bank Transfer: You can set up a one-off direct transfer via your personal online banking. Log on to your online banking and set up a donation using our bank details below. Please use your surname and initials as your reference, and let us know that you have set up a new transfer by contacting our Treasurer using our contact form.

Other Ways to Give

  • Give Online: Via https://www.stewardship.org.uk/partners/20293172
  • Payroll Giving or ‘Give-as-you-earn (GAYE)’Payroll Giving: Also known as “Give As You Earn” or “Workplace Giving,” is a scheme that allows employees to donate money to charities directly from their gross salary before income tax is deducted. This means employees get tax relief on their donations, and charities receive the full amount of the donation.
  • Matched Giving: Some larger companies, as part of their corporate responsibility programme, also have matched giving schemes, so that when you give to charity, the company makes a contribution as well. This effectively increases your donation for free. For more info see https://www.cafonline.org/corporate-giving/effective-ways-to-give/matched-giving
  • Giving Through Your Own Company: If you run your own business and choose to give through your company rather than as an individual, this is deducted from your profits before calculating your tax liability, so will reduce the Corporation Tax due. This is true whether your donation is in the form of money or goods-in-kind. The tax saved can then be added to your giving.

Legacy

It may seem a long way away, but remember that giving after your death can be tax free too. Gifts to charity in a will are tax exempt and can be used to bring an estate below the threshold for inheritance tax. If you give more than 10% of your estate, it will reduce the inheritance tax rate too. You can give items of value, such as jewellery, as well as money. If you wish your Legacy to be put to a specific purpose, you can specify that in your will. For many people, leaving a gift in their will is a final opportunity to make a lasting gift to God. Gifts in wills to our church will help to fund our mission partners, maintain our beautiful church buildings and grow our church community. Details of how to plan for legacy giving to St Bart’s are included in the Church of England leaflet “How you can make a Lasting Gift to your Church”
